By Joshua Harris – Colorado Springs: Multnomah Books Initial confession – it was the small, attractive format of this book which first drew my attention -an A5 sized hardback with large and well spaced font. Then the intriguing title, which seemed a strange combination of relationship guide and church life commentary. Joshua Harris offers a new mindset for discouraged disciples to re-engage with passion and love with their neighbourhood gathering of the Body of Christ — one chapter is subtitled ‘Thinking Globally, Loving Locally’, another ‘Seeing Church from Heaven’s Perspective’.
As this is a short book, I get the impression that Joshua Harris deliberately overstates his case to make a point; here are a selection of quotes which could provoke new insight, lively debate or disgusted disagreement! For anyone who has wondered at times what on earth is God doing in describing us lot gathered together as His bride-to-be, this book provides a summary guide to key verses in the Gospels, Epistles and Revelation which outline God’s intention for the “little ‘c’ church” local and the “big ‘C’ church” global, eternal.

Stop Dating the Church by Joshua Harris calls readers out to wholeheartedly commit to be engaged in a local body of Christ. Josh begins with his personal journey to this commitment, and how his casual views of the importance of the local church changed. In chapter one Josh gives several characteristics of church daters.
First, he says they tend to me-centered. What can the Church do for me? What can I get out of it? What programs and activities are good for me? Second, a church dater is independent. Church daters go to Church because they are supposed to, but are careful so they do not get to close to anyone. They are not focused on the larger purposes of God through the church. Third, church daters tend to be critical of the church.

Imagine your wedding day or any beautiful wedding ceremony that you have attended. Think of the husband’s eyes—completely focused on his bride. He is captured by her beauty and stands ready to give all his life to her. Similarly, the bride’s eyes are only for her groom, and as she steps toward him, she readies herself to make the same lifelong commitment to him.
This earthly picture of all-consuming love points us toward a much greater reality. For a husband’s passion for his bride gives us a small glimpse into God’s love for His heavenly bride, the church. Just imagine the impact the church could have on society today if we shifted from serving ourselves to wholeheartedly serving Christ’s bride. Our God loves His bride with an everlasting love that is stronger than death, and He has demonstrated His commitment to her by not sparing His own Son see Jeremiah ; Song of Songs ; Romans Just as a husband cares for his wife, Christ deeply cares for His church.
The moment you became a Christian, you yourself became a part of His bride. Therefore, if we love Christ and our own selves, we cannot be indifferent to her plight. After all, we are one with her just as a husband and wife are one see Ephesians

Friends, instead of seeing the church for all its flaws and foibles, why not see it as the wisdom of God Ephesians , and the beautiful bride of Christ Ephesians Jesus is the only one who has the right to disown or give up on the church, but he never has and never will. But may I challenge you to also develop a heart for the church?
Speaker and writer Joshua Harris argues that many Christians put in their hour or two at the weekend and take the rest of the week off, neglecting the church and.
We see in Genesis that God takes a day a week for renewal very seriously. He made Sabbath-keeping one of the Ten Commandments. But if you’re worried that I’m going to try to convince you that Sunday is the new Sabbath for Christians, you’re wrong. I don’t believe that Christians are called to observe the Old Testament laws about Sabbath-keeping. Still I think we’re missing out on enormous personal and spiritual blessings when we treat Sunday like any other day.
Because it isn’t. The early church called it “the Lord’s day. I think you’ll discover that God has something for you that will radically change your church experience because Sundays have come to us as on of His sweetest gifts. We first need to see Sunday with new eyes. Of course, in one sense it’s just an ordinary day– twenty-four hours during which the sun rises and sets. But when your heart begins to beat for God’s glory and God’s people and you begin to glimpse His longing to visit you, Sunday changes.
Actually, it becomes something extraordinary.
