Destiny – New Prison of Elders Details: Scorch Cannon, Critical Objectives, Modifiers
Bungie gave players a look at Destiny ‘s new and evidently pretty tough Prison of Elders mode in a live stream earlier today. The short explanation is “yep, it’s definitely a three-player horde mode” – but with all the flourishes and quirks you expect from high-level Destiny play. The base-level Prison of Elders is rated for Level 28, and all of its challenges and modifiers are randomly selected.
It’s matchmaking-ready and you’re free to play as many times a week as you want. If you have a pre-made team, you can also take a crack at the three challenges set at level 32, level 34, and level
Today’s update was covering “New Things To Do”. The April Update brings The Reef and Prison of Elders into Y2. arena, the L41 arena will consist of a fire team of three guardians and it will have matchmaking available.

You can find all the details just below! In Bungie’s developer update 8th February it announced that the original Destiny’s Nightfall Scoring will be returning in Destiny 2. It’s slated for launch in Update 1. On top of all this Strike Scoring are Challenge Cards, items that offer ways to boost the difficulty in exchange for score multipliers.

As guessed by numerous fans, Prison of Elders is a variation on the Horde mode first popularized years ago by Gears of War. In the storyline of House of Wolves, most of the Fallen soldiers that previously served the Queen of the Awoken have betrayed her, but one of the Fallen remained behind in the Reef and is still loyal. This Fallen character, named Variks, acts as a warden for the prison, and he engineers an opportunity for guardians to test their mettle within the dreaded detention facility.
Variks acts both as the central narrator for the Prison, but also as the vendor for rewards. Looking beyond the story setup, Prison of Elders is built as an end-game activity for three players. Each run at the Prison of Elders requires three players. A base level 28 version includes randomized rounds, bosses, and conditional effects, and this version allows for matchmaking, so you can play even without any of your friends online.
In any given week, the Prison of Elders also has three challenge versions available, and matchmaking is not provided. These more defined challenges pit you against particular enemies within the Prison, and have more preset conditions and rewards. Each week, you can tackle a level 32, 34, and 35 challenge mode. There are six total challenge arenas to tackle in House of Wolves, but only three of them will be available each week, and then a new one will rotate into circulation, kicking the bottom level 32 challenge off with its arrival.

However you decide to jump in, the Prison of Elders will throw enemies at you in increasingly difficult waves. While many players were surprised and even a bit disappointed to learn that the expansion wouldn’t contain a new Raid , there’s a number of new features which should help fill that void. We’re now learning this week that the upcoming Destiny expansion holds even more content, introducing a battle arena called the Prison of Elders which is also bringing a long requested feature with it to the game.

Today, Bungie took to Twitch and other sources around the interwebs to showcase the new endgame activity for Destiny, the Prison of Elders. The new mode allows for a few ways to play in terms of difficulty. During the livestream, a display of the new location, The Reef, gave us a look at four ways to get down and dirty with the activity all staged for different levels of challenge. It was expressed that the base version is a level 28 random activity in the Prison of Elders that allows matchmaking and can be played as many times as desired for constant reward.
From what I understand, the activity consists of about 5 to 6 rounds each spanning 3 waves to complete. Before entering a room however, each round you are given a match modifier that affects the way you take on the room. Some of these modifiers may be familiar to those that make the weekly strike grind such as Arc Burn or Lightswitch, but there are new ones as well like Brawler that increases Guardian melee damage or even one that buffs the amount of damage your shield can take but also negates shield regeneration.
Constantly having to switch up your gear or tactics on the fly will require some heavy concentration and coordination from you and your Fireteam. Some round waves also have objective based gameplay like I said before. This entails things like having to capture zones to disarm bombs in certain time frames or killing a specific enemy before he reaches his destination all in the midst of combat making players become constantly on the move.
If these secondary objectives are not completed, guardians are brutally forced to restart the round from square one so be sure to hit those objectives as soon as they pop up. Mini bosses are another issue for players to have to face.
Opinion: Multiplayer can be a pain, but it doesn’t have to be
This new co-op Arena activity will see groups of three players take on waves of increasingly difficult AI-controlled enemies. The more waves Guardians survive, the greater the reward at the game’s conclusion. Thankfully, this Prison of Elders mode allows for matchmaking, so you won’t have to worry about arranging time with two pals to hook up and try to unlock those Legendary and Exotic rewards. Of course you can still tackle the events with your own Fireteam, too.

Yet lone wolf players still find it a struggle to access much of the high level content, simply because very little of it can be played alone, and the game purposely limits matchmaking options. Bungie seems firm on this point, and with only a few weeks until the launch of The Taken King , there has been no announcement to the contrary.
Of all the Destiny debates to persist through Year 1, none is as polarizing as issues of matchmaking. Both sides make strong arguments of support either way. Opposition is usually framed by the fact that some content, notably Temple of Osiris and raids , would be brutally difficult to play in squads with no communication. Lone wolf players still find it a struggle to access much of the high level content, simply because very little of it can be played alone. While LFG sites offer options for those who are feeling lonely, they certainly do not represent a panacea solution without problems.
As a gamer, I play a lot. Until the emergence of Destiny a year ago, the word casual seldom had negative connotations in gaming circles. Imagine being scolded for this in a public forum…the gaming equivalent of being dressed down for not studying for a test. Having sampled raids, I can give them a pass on this. They are not just difficult, but complex, requiring virtually everyone to be on a mic, or at least be listening to the team.

What Destiny 2 Needs to Hold a Community Better Than Its Predecessor
Everything about expansion two for Bungie’s “shared world shooter” Destiny makes sense to me. The changes to the competitive multiplayer portion of the game we reported on last week give PvP, for the first time, a proper endgame. The new upgrade system means any Legendary or Exotic weapon and armour piece can be made level 34 – without it losing progression.

Here is how ” optional ” matchmaking would work. Once activated, the game will automatically look for team mates for you like it does in strike missions and stuff. People have different schedules, so even if a player had an abundance of friends playing Destiny; playing with them can still be a challenge because of such things like But, what I am curious about is how many people that LIKE this game have been locked out of the ” end game content ” because of the lack of ” optional ” matchmaking?
I’m sorry to say this, but Destiny 2 is going to be a massive failure if ” optional ” matchmaking isn’t implemented in it. I didn’t realize there was no matchmaking for the higher POE until I had already started the game. I was like this isn’t even going to work.
Conquering Destiny’s Prison Of Elders
For anyone game with online features, one of the most important parts is matching players up with other players. If you can’t do that, then you might as well not even have a multiplayer component. Yet every year we see AAA titles release that fail to adequately master this part of the equation.

House of Wolves will have a new cooperative end game activity focused on variety, replayability, and skill — a new battle Arena called The Prison of Elders. For some reason whenever I hear Arena, however, I get turned off. Not quite sure why, maybe just because of the shallow implementations of arena modes that have been done in the past. Not necessarily by Bungie. I wonder how similar it will be to Firefight in Reach. I am actually pretty excited for them to mix it up and not provide a raid.
An arena style survival mode could be done poorly, but I am glad that they are giving this a shot. The idea of capping my level again just so i can do the stupid raid does not sound like fun. I would be much more willing to participate in something like a horde mode at this point. Bungie also made some notable changes to a couple of Martian strikes and to both raids. Agreed that strike was the worst offender of the bunch.
All the strike end bosses could have dropped the amount of health they had though. I am surprised they only did it for this boss. New teaser trailer.
